MATRIX is Australia’s international and residential mathematical research institute. It facilitates new collaborations and mathematical advances through intensive residential research programs, each 1-4 weeks in duration. This book is a scientific record of the eight programs held at MATRIX in its second year, 2017: - Hypergeometric Motives and Calabi–Yau Differential Equations - Computational Inverse Problems - Integrability in Low-Dimensional Quantum Systems - Elliptic Partial Differential Equations of Second Order: Celebrating 40 Years of Gilbarg and Trudinger’s Book - Combinatorics, Statistical Mechanics, and Conformal Field Theory - Mathematics of Risk - Tutte Centenary Retreat - Geometric R-Matrices: from Geometry to Probability The articles are grouped into peer-reviewed contributions and other contributions. The peer-reviewed articles present original results or reviews on a topic related to the MATRIX program; the remaining contributions are predominantly lecture notes or short articles based on talks or activities at MATRIX.
Flipped learning—in which students view recorded lectures outside of the classroom and then utilize class time to develop a broad range of knowledge and skills—is a relatively new phenomenon. This timely volume examines and organizes the emerging research on flipped learning in higher education. It identifies the types of courses, material, and learning objectives that are most effectively flipped, with specialized advice for faculty in STEM fields, the social sciences, and humanities. The book also provides evidence-based guidance on how to create and disseminate engaging recorded lectures; develop and implement in-class exercises and projects that help students meet learning objectives; orient students to the flipped classroom; and assess the effectiveness of flipped learning.

The second Women in Numbers workshop (WIN2) was held November 6-11, 2011, at the Banff International Research Station (BIRS) in Banff, Alberta, Canada. During the workshop, group leaders presented open problems in various areas of number theory, and working groups tackled those problems in collaborations begun at the workshop and continuing long after.
