Mathematics and Computation in Music

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Mathematics and Computation in Music, MCM 2022, held in Atlanta, GA, USA, in June 2022. The 29 full papers and 8 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 45 submissions. The papers feature research that combines mathematics or computation with music theory, music analysis, composition, and performance. They are organized in Mathematical Scale and Rhythm Theory: Combinatorial, Graph Theoretic, Group Theoretic and Transformational Approaches; Categorical and Algebraic Approaches to Music; Algorithms and Modeling for Music and Music-Related Phenomena; Applications of Mathematics to Musical Analysis; Mathematical Techniques and Microtonality

Mathematical Music Theory: Algebraic, Geometric, Combinatorial, Topological And Applied Approaches To Understanding Musical Phenomena

Questions about variation, similarity, enumeration, and classification of musical structures have long intrigued both musicians and mathematicians. Mathematical models can be found from theoretical analysis to actual composition or sound production. Increasingly in the last few decades, musical scholarship has incorporated modern mathematical content. One example is the application of methods from Algebraic Combinatorics, or Topology and Graph Theory, to the classification of different musical objects. However, these applications of mathematics in the understanding of music have also led to interesting open problems in mathematics itself. The reach and depth of the contributions on mathematical music theory presented in this volume is significant. Each contribution is in a section within these subjects: (i) Algebraic and Combinatorial Approaches; (ii) Geometric, Topological, and Graph-Theoretical Approaches; and (iii) Distance and Similarity Measures in Music.

DOE Simplified

Offering a planned approach for determining cause and effect, this work provides researchers with the statistical means to analyze how numerous variables interact. With this second edition of DOE Simplified, Mark Anderson and Patrick Whitcomb retain their lively approach to the learning of fundamentals. They lighten up the inherently dry complexities with interesting sidebars and amusing anecdotes. In this edition, they add new and updated information, including a four-step planning process for designing and executing experiments with a consideration of statistical power. Accompanying this book is a 180-day trial for the new version of Stat-Ease's software: Design-Ease®,v. 7. This educational program assists with mathematic computations, so as to allow one to focus on analysis of the data.

Automatic Sequences

Uniting dozens of seemingly disparate results from different fields, this book combines concepts from mathematics and computer science to present the first integrated treatment of sequences generated by 'finite automata'. The authors apply the theory to the study of automatic sequences and their generalizations, such as Sturmian words and k-regular sequences. And further, they provide applications to number theory (particularly to formal power series and transcendence in finite characteristic), physics, computer graphics, and music. Starting from first principles wherever feasible, basic results from combinatorics on words, numeration systems, and models of computation are discussed. Thus this book is suitable for graduate students or advanced undergraduates, as well as for mature researchers wishing to know more about this fascinating subject. Results are presented from first principles wherever feasible, and the book is supplemented by a collection of 460 exercises, 85 open problems, and over 1600 citations to the literature.

STOLEN HALO is a moving and engrossing memoirabout childhood physical, sexual and emotional abuse; about rejection and abandonmentthat provides a perspective that only a person who was that child can know. STOLEN HALO is a true testament to the importance and the process of facing ones past head-on, resurrecting that past, owning and respecting it, putting it into written wordsand then sharing ones own story with the universe in the hope that those words will somehow help others make sense of their own lives just as writing them made sense to the author. For Trish Dinsmoor, in STOLEN HALO, it isnt just a matter of honestyit is a matter of responsibilityto get her message of hope out to all the victims of abuse. STOLEN HALOand its poignant message of hope and survivalis Trish Dinsmoors attempt to set herself and other victims free.
