"Øen og stjernen" er en slægtsroman, der gennem familien Jansgaard trækker en tråd gennem det meste af det tyvende århundrede. Romanen starter i 1910, hvor Jens Christian Jansgaard køber en gård på den fiktive ø Onø syd for Sjælland for en spillegevinst. Her opdrager han døtrene Gertrud og Karin, der er som nat og dag. Den gudfrygtige Gertrud bliver tilbage på gården, hvor hun fører slægten videre, mens Karin flytter til USA og Berlin og bliver stumfilmstjerne. Selvom Gertruds børn aldrig oplever Karin bo på deres fødeø, tiltrækkes de af stjernen, når de selv står med valget om at blive på Onø eller søge selvstændighed og karriere ude i den store verden, og på den måde bliver Karin omdrejningspunktet for bogen, familien og romanen. Troels Kjær er en dansk forfatter. Ved siden af virket som forfatter har Troels Kjær taget en pædagoguddannelse og har i mange år arbejdet i socialpsykiatrien. Troels Kjær har fået flere noveller og digte trykt i forskellige blade og debuterede i bogform som forfatter i 1992 med romanen "Øen og stjernen".
