Tales from Eutopia

Deftly crafted around the overarching theme of education, Tales from Eutopia, by author Llewellyn Mark Jones, offers a collection of thirteen intriguing short stories. Eutopia seems illusory while based on relatable experiences. These narratives contain diverse perspectives that transcend the educational context, revealing curious truths. Some characters travel from story to story. Some tales ask: “What if”? Yet others foster contemplation and revelation. The opening tale, “Staring Truth,” explores a kindergarten boy’s credibility, which has dire, global consequences. “The Deacon” pays tribute to a minister whose contributions impact the school and the community after a tragedy. Tales from Eutopia connects Eutopia to the world, opening a conversation. From the kindergarten classroom to the university lecture hall, these narratives share valuable lessons about learning and life.

When Jake Chin headed off to the war in Vietnam, he left a lot of things behind in California, including his parents, his identical twin brother, and nearly two decades of unresolved family conflict and drama. Then, once in 'Nam, he left even more behind—but took something away with him. When his friend and fellow soldier was shot down on the battlefield in Laos, Jake abandoned his name and military career and picked up his fallen friend's identity. But becoming someone else isn't exactly easy. There are deliberate changes that must be made and complications that inevitably creep in during the process. All those things Jake left behind in California and Laos slowly but surely come back to haunt him, and, where his past intersects with his present, a great risk to his future is created. Can Jake go on living another man's life? Can he find love and peace? Or will his duplicity get the better of him and turn his dream for a new life into a living nightmare? A sharp and sophisticated novel, Heir of Promise tells a thoroughly thrilling tale of trial, tribulation, and triumph that will entertain you and stimulate your sensibilities and higher thinking.

Towards the end of the fifth century BC Ctesias of Cnidus wrote his 23 book History of Persia. Ctesias is a remarkable figure: he lived and worked in the Persian court and, as a doctor, tended to the world’s most powerful kings and queens. His position gave him special insight into the workings of Persian court life and access to the gossip and scandal surrounding Persian history and court politics, past and present. His History of Persia was completed at a time when the Greeks were fascinated by Persia and seems very much to cater to contemporary interest in Persian wealth and opulence, powerful Persian women, the institution of the harem, kings and queens, eunuchs and secret plots. Presented here in English translation for the first time with commentaries, Ctesias offers a fascinating insight into Persia in the fifth century BC.

Since Independence, the princes and regional rulers of India have mostly been seen as anachronistic figures, too closely associated with the former colonial government, and often a byword for extravagance, sybaritic lifestyles, and mild despotism. When in 1967 they were stripped of their privy purses by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, there were more protests in Britain than in India. No serious efforts have been made to put these men, and a few women, in a pictorial context, to examine the differing styles of portraiture favoured by them, and the motives behind the pictures, until now. The more one gazes at these important but hitherto neglected works of art, the more questions are raised. This book attempts to answer and interpret some of them. The arrival of European painters in late 18th century India presented a new opportunity for Indian rulers to commission self-portraits of a different kind, and also to influence indigenous artists in new styles and paint mediums. The arrival of photography brought a further opportunity for them to be pictured in different ways.
