The Angle of Horror

From Cristina Fernández Cubas, Spain's award-winning master of the short story, comes a collection of unsettling, thought-provoking, and often hilarious stories, The Angle of Horror. A socially awkward twenty-something who transforms from Jekyll to Hyde by playing the tuba; a miserly curmudgeon whose ultimate act of generosity as well as his final breath are snuffed out by a seemingly innocent grandson; a young collegian who suffers a nightmare of shadows and slants, then discovers his waking world is also horribly askew; a lonely Spaniard living abroad who seeks familiarity in a Spanish specialty shop but only finds true belonging while obsessively stalking the proprietor. These are but a few of the "angles" that Fernández Cubas constructs in these four twisted tales: "Helicon," "Grandfather’s Legacy," "The Angle of Horror," and "The Flower of Spain." Presented in critical edition and translation for the first time, these acclaimed Spanish tales are featured alongside their English translation, with historical contextualization and critical commentary by scholars Jessica A. Folkart and Michelle Geoffrion-Vinci.

The Reception of East Slavic Literatures in the West and the East

This volume, edited by scholars from diverse backgrounds, stems from the original convergence of various geo-cultural viewpoints on the reception of East Slavic cultures and literatures (Russian, Ukrainian, Belarussian, Soviet): European viewpoints are juxtaposed with those of the Japanese, Chinese, Israeli areas. The volume offers a broad look at the history of the perception of these literatures in Europe, Italy, and East Asia (with special attention to their reception in Japan and China). Contacts, influences, meditations, and difficulties in the perception of literary and cultural phenomena are the subject of original comparative analyses. The vitality with which Slavic-Eastern literatures have found echoes in very distant environments, but also the evolution of the self-perception of Ukrainian literature over time, are among the topics.

Giovanni di Francesco and the Master of Pratovecchio

  • Categories: Art

The Getty Museum’s curator of paintings traces the provenance of the so-called Poggibonsi Altarpiece, one of the Museum’s fifteenth-century triptychs, attributing it to Giovanni di Francesco. He also discusses the possible identification of Giovanni as the Master of Pratovecchio and then catalogues works attributed to both painters that form part of other museum collections.

This edited collection examines the synergistic relationship between gender and urban space in post-millennium Spain. Despite the social progress Spain has made extending equal rights to all citizens, particularly in the wake of the Franco regime and radically liberating Transición, the fact remains that not all subjects—particularly, women, immigrants, and queers—possess equal autonomy. The book exposes visible shifts in power dynamics within the nation’s largest urban capitals—Madrid and Barcelona—and takes a hard look at more peripheral bedroom communities as all of these spaces reflect the discontent of a post-nationalistic, economically unstable Spain. As the contributors problematize notions of public and private space and disrupt gender binaries related with these, they aspire to engender discussion around civic status, the administration of space and the place of all citizens in a global world.
