Religious Narratives in Contemporary Culture: Between Cultural Memory and Transmediality analyzes the presence and function of traces of religious narratives in contemporary western culture, from the perspective of cultural memory studies and the transmedial study of narrative and art.
Monolingual, monolithic English is an issue of the past. In this collection, by using cinema, poetry, art, and novels we demonstrate that English has become the heteroglossic language of immigration – Englishes of exile. By appropriating its plural form we pay respect to all those who have been improving standard English, thus proving that one may be born in a language as well as give birth to a language or add to it one’s own version. The story of the immigrant, refugee, exile, expatriate is everybody’s story, and without migration, we could not evolve our human race.
The book offers a sharp analysis of the relationship between transnationalism and patterns of identity negotiation in contemporary fiction of migration. Visual Rhetorics of Communist Romania: Life under the Totalitarian Gaze offers personal accounts and theoretical insight into the Cold War era when little information about life beyond the Iron Curtain could transpire to the West. Many claim the contemporary world lacks empathy, this being the reason for all the atrocities in it. When thinking about the perpetrators of such brutalities, it is easy to assume they cannot acknowledge others as their equals. But is a lack of empathy a prerequisite for becoming a criminal? Would empathy then be preemptive of murder? When something terrible happens, we may be tempted to look for the source of violence exclusively in the criminals. However, when talking about human beings and the motives for their actions, one has to delve deeper. In Simon Stephens’s Pornography and David Greig’s The Events, two different crimes against humanity are portrayed.
