The book shows how simulation’s long history and close ties to industry since the third industrial revolution have led to its growing importance in Industry 4.0. The book emphasises the role of simulation in the new industrial revolution, and its application as a key aspect of making Industry 4.0 a reality – and thus achieving the complete digitisation of manufacturing and business. It presents various perspectives on simulation and demonstrates its applications, from augmented or virtual reality to process engineering, and from quantum computing to intelligent management. Simulation for Industry 4.0 is a guide and milestone for the simulation community, as well as those readers working to achieve the goals of Industry 4.0. The connections between simulation and Industry 4.0 drawn here will be of interest not only to beginners, but also to practitioners and researchers as a point of departure in the subject, and as a guide for new lines of study.

Military technology is highly advanced in terms of technology being used in the field, computer applications, artificial intelligence, and software applications. These high-performance technologies range from weapons to communications technology to automation in vehicles and weaponry. These technologies must be both secure and reliable in harsh environments. Research is being focused specifically on that, including how military and defense applications operate, what modern technologies are being used, and the ethics surrounding these applications. A holistic view of these applications is necessary for both understanding current military tactics and tools along with the future applications. T...

ORAHS, the Working Group on Operational Research Applied to Health Services, is a special-interest group of EURO (the European Association of OR Societies). ORAHS meets every year in a different host country. The objectives of the group include communication of ideas, knowledge and experience concerning the application of Operational Research approaches and methods to problems in the health services area; mutual support between members; and collaboration on joint projects. The 31st meeting of ORAHS was held in 2005 at the University of Southampton, UK. A total of forty-one scientific papers were presented, nineteen of which are contained in this volume. The application areas covered include resource allocation, performance measurement and disease modelling, from within Europe and beyond. The approaches used range from mathematical optimization, simulation and statistical modelling through to «soft» OR. These proceedings provide a broad perspective on current research in this area across Europe and beyond.

This book is one of very few in the maritime literature that solely focus on the latest developments in information technology (IT) methodologies in this field. It provides the reader with a concise overview of how IT can truly improve the efficacy of operations in the maritime industry. It consists of seven chapters that address a range of topics related to the synergy between Computer Science and Maritime Science. Specifically, Chapters 1 and 2 explore two important problems in maritime logistics pertaining to quayside operational planning, while Chapters 3 and 4 focus on maritime routing methodologies. Chapters 5 and 6 present decision-making support systems for safe shipping and port security. Last, Chapter 7 presents simulation methodologies for modeling maritime traffic. The intended readership of the book spans both an academic audience and professionals in the areas of Operational Research, Transportation Science, and Maritime Science interested in applying IT methodologies in their areas of expertise.

Recently, there has been a rapid increase in interest regarding social network analysis in the data mining community. Cognitive radios are expected to play a major role in meeting this exploding traffic demand on social networks due to their ability to sense the environment, analyze outdoor parameters, and then make decisions for dynamic time, frequency, space, resource allocation, and management to improve the utilization of mining the social data. Cognitive Social Mining Applications in Data Analytics and Forensics is an essential reference source that reviews cognitive radio concepts and examines their applications to social mining using a machine learning approach so that an adaptive and intelligent mining is achieved. Featuring research on topics such as data mining, real-time ubiquitous social mining services, and cognitive computing, this book is ideally designed for social network analysts, researchers, academicians, and industry professionals.

Since ancient times, plants serve as a valuable source of traditional herbal medicines. Unlike modern medicines, herbal medicines have consistently demonstrated health advantages, including a lack of serious adverse side effects, long-lasting curative impacts and overall cost-effectiveness. Even today, with various modern pharmaceutical medicines commonly available, plant-based medicines and aromatics are increasingly in demand throughout the health sector globally, where they are used not only for the treatment of disease, but also, preventatively for maintaining good health. People are seeking alternatives to modern medical treatments turning to phytomedicine for primary health care. Howev...

The Morality of Weapons Research

  • Publisher: Springer

This book addresses the morality of engaging in weapons research, a topic that has been neglected but which is extremely important. It is argued that this activity is both morally wrong and morally unjustifiable, and this implies that moral persons should not engage in it. The argument is not based on any pacifist assumptions: it is not assumed that neither individuals nor states should not defend themselves. What is wrong with weapons research is that it is the first step in the production of weapons, weapons are the means to harm, and harming without justification is always wrong. Those who study science, for instance those who are interested in the responsibilities of the scientist, are given a new perspective, while those who are practicing scientists will realize that they should not consider working to design new or improved weapons systems. This book is of interest to students and researchers working in ethics and technology, philosophy of technology, military ethics, and history of technology.
