Volume 7 covers a variety of pressing intellectual property topics facing inventors, artists, and intellectual property attorneys today. Cybaris(R) is continually looking for new ways to reach readers. Our online issue and social media will allow the law review to reach new audiences in an interactive, approachable manner. Of all the different areas in computational chemistry, density functional theory (DFT) enjoys the most rapid development. Even at the level of the local density approximation (LDA), which is computationally less demanding, DFT can usually provide better answers than Hartree-Fock formalism for large systems such as clusters and solids. For atoms and molecules, the results from DFT often rival those obtained by ab initio quantum chemistry, partly because larger basis sets can be used. Such encouraging results have in turn stimulated workers to further investigate the formal theory as well as the computational methodology of DFT.This Part II expands on the methodology and applications of DFT. Some of the chapters report on the latest developments (since the publication of Part I in 1995), while others extend the applications to wider range of molecules and their environments. Together, this and other recent review volumes on DFT show that DFT provides an efficient and accurate alternative to traditional quantum chemical methods. Such demonstration should hopefully stimulate frutiful developments in formal theory, better exchange-correlation functionals, and linear scaling methodology.
This book aims to present the concept of Solvent Engineering within a broad scope, ranging from mixtures of solvents to achieve the desired solvation properties, to stimuli-responsive solvents. It covers diverse aspects such as thermodynamics and transfer phenomena associated with solvent engineering, as well as applications found in recent literature, spanning materials across science, biochemistry, chemistry, and separation and purification processes, among others. Solvent engineering is proposed as an innovative strategy to address environmental concerns related to the use of volatile and toxic solvents. This book highlights efforts to develop engineered solvents that offer more environmentally acceptable alternatives as against those currently in use.
This handbook provides guidance on methods for use in fish ageing studies. Fish age, among other biological parameters, is one of the most relevant pieces of data to attain sustainable exploitation levels of fishery resources. Indeed, most analytical methods used in stock assessment require knowledge of demographic structure according to age of stocks, as well as to recruitment, growth, maturity, natural mortality, etc., which are strictly linked to information on age and age structure. The handbook was put together to deal with identified gaps – which affect both the precision and the accuracy of estimations – regarding ageing schemes, criteria and methodologies used in preparing calcified structures. It focuses on the general principles that underpin age analysis (assignment of birth date, preparation methods, aging scheme reading and identification of true and false rings). Crucially, it aims to contribute to the establishment of common analysis methods, which can enable better calibration across the diverse institutes involved, thereby improving the quality and reliability of results.
