(Hidden) Minorities
This book asks why several ethnic and linguistic groups in Central Europe and the Balkans have not yet been legally recognized as national minorities. Some of these hidden minorities have not developed an intellectual elite that can visibly present their identity and claims to the majority population. Other groups are deliberately concealing their existence and language for reasons of self-protection. The chapters in this volume address the everyday mechanisms of hiding and being hidden in the transition zone of these two European regions.
"Fischen und Fischergespräch und Anderes von Petar Hektorovic aus Hvar"
Dieser Band stellt Petar Hektorović (1487-1572) mit seinem Werk und Leben vor. Sein einziges Buch Fischen und Fischergespräch und Anderes hat er 1568 in Venedig veröffentlicht. Es besteht aus sechzehn sehr verschiedenartigen Texten in drei Sprachen, bildet aber einen sinnreichen Zyklus. Sie werden hier auf Kroatisch, Latein und Italienisch sowie in deutscher Übersetzung wiedergegeben, kommentiert und zusammenfassend analysiert. Sein ganzes Leben lang hat Hektorović, ein Humanist von der Insel Hvar, an einem befestigten Landsitz gebaut. Dessen Anlage bildet mit den darin eingemauerten Inschriften einen zweiten Zyklus, der das poetologische Programm des Buches widerspiegelt. Die geistige und materielle Hinterlassenschaft bilden miteinander ein Ganzes, das einen intimen Einblick in die Renaissancekultur Kroatiens gewährt.
Outdoor and Experiential Learning
Outdoor and experiential learning has advanced in leaps and bounds over the last 20 years. Educators and developers in the Czech and Slovak Republics have been unexpected leaders in the field; the result of isolation of the country under communism and a unique mix of culture and geography. This book offers a guide to the theory and techniques, pioneered by the Czechs and Slovaks, including the concept of dramaturgy, a process involving elements of learning psychology, role play and theatre that concentrates on physical, social, creative and reflective/emotional learning states. It also includes a full set of guidelines for designing outdoor and experiential events, along with complete instructions for 30 games. The authors provide design opportunities to be more creative in the development of young people, as well as older learners and those involved in corporate management education.
Model Averaging
This book provides a concise and accessible overview of model averaging, with a focus on applications. Model averaging is a common means of allowing for model uncertainty when analysing data, and has been used in a wide range of application areas, such as ecology, econometrics, meteorology and pharmacology. The book presents an overview of the methods developed in this area, illustrating many of them with examples from the life sciences involving real-world data. It also includes an extensive list of references and suggestions for further research. Further, it clearly demonstrates the links between the methods developed in statistics, econometrics and machine learning, as well as the connection between the Bayesian and frequentist approaches to model averaging. The book appeals to statisticians and scientists interested in what methods are available, how they differ and what is known about their properties. It is assumed that readers are familiar with the basic concepts of statistical theory and modelling, including probability, likelihood and generalized linear models.
Spectral Analysis for Univariate Time Series
Spectral analysis is widely used to interpret time series collected in diverse areas. This book covers the statistical theory behind spectral analysis and provides data analysts with the tools needed to transition theory into practice. Actual time series from oceanography, metrology, atmospheric science and other areas are used in running examples throughout, to allow clear comparison of how the various methods address questions of interest. All major nonparametric and parametric spectral analysis techniques are discussed, with emphasis on the multitaper method, both in its original formulation involving Slepian tapers and in a popular alternative using sinusoidal tapers. The authors take a unified approach to quantifying the bandwidth of different nonparametric spectral estimates. An extensive set of exercises allows readers to test their understanding of theory and practical analysis. The time series used as examples and R language code for recreating the analyses of the series are available from the book's website.
Probabilistic Approach to Geometry
The first Seasonal Institute of the Mathematical Society of Japan (MSJ-SI) “Probabilistic Approach to Geometry” was held at Kyoto University, Japan, on 28th July 2008 - 8th August, 2008.
