Escape from North Korea

From the world’s most repressive state comes rare good news: the escape to freedom of a small number of its people. It is a crime to leave North Korea. Yet increasing numbers of North Koreans dare to flee. They go first to neighboring China, which rejects them as criminals, then on to Southeast Asia or Mongolia, and finally to South Korea, the United States, and other free countries. They travel along a secret route known as the new underground railroad. With a journalist’s grasp of events and a novelist’s ear for narrative, Melanie Kirkpatrick tells the story of the North Koreans’ quest for liberty. Travelers on the new underground railroad include women bound to Chinese men who pur...

Evidence-Based Endocrinology

Internationally recognized experts, pioneers, and opinion makers in evidence-based medicine (EBM) provocatively recast endocrine policy and practice in the light of EBM philosophy and principles. The authors explain the past, present, and future of EBM; consider its practical implications for endocrinology; demonstrate what the "evidence base" is in EBM; and present illustrative case studies by practicing evidence-based clinicians. Highlights include essays on why cost-effective analyses are problematic, the contrast between clinical investigations and large randomized trials, the role of Cochrane reviews and meta-analyses, and the curriculum requirements for training evidence-based endocrinologists.

Can a better understanding of group dynamics raise individual and team athletic performance or improve the outcomes of exercise interventions? Much human behaviour in sport and exercise settings is embedded within groups where individuals’ cognitions, emotions, and behaviours influence and are influenced by other group members. Group Dynamics in Exercise and Sports Psychology: Contemporary Themes explores the unique psychological dynamics that emerge in sport and exercise groups. It provides a clear and thorough guide to contemporary theory and research. Recommendations are also presented to inform applied psychology ‘best practice’. Drawing together the expertise of international specialists from sports and exercise psychology, the text covers core themes as well as emerging issues in group dynamics. The text is organised into four sections: Part 1: The Self in Groups Part 2: Leadership in Groups Part 3: Group Environment Part 4: Motivation in Groups Group Dynamics in Exercise and Sports Psychology: Contemporary Themes will be of interest to psychology, kinesiology, sport and exercise science students and researchers, as well as to consultants and coaches.

Project Pearl

Project Pearl was the delivery, in June 1981, of one million Bibles into China by a tugboat and barge manned by twenty dedicated missionaries. The delivery was soaked in prayer and took place right under the noses of the People's Liberation Army and the naval patrol boats and coastal radar of China's Guangdong Province. It was organised by Brother David, a big ex-Marine and friend of Brother Andrew ('God's Smuggler'). David's military training proved crucial in this audacious, visionary feat. His story is at the heart of this book. The immediate consequence of Project Pearl was that Chinese printing presses started to turn out Bibles too: the longer term consequence was to stoke the flames of the Chinese revival which are now so wonderfully evident.

Health and human services currently face a series of challenges – such as aging populations, chronic diseases and new endemics – that require highly complex responses, and take place in multiple care environments including acute medicine, chronic care facilities and the community. Accordingly, most modern health care interventions are now seen as ‘complex interventions’ – activities that contain a number of component parts with the potential for interactions between them which, when applied to the intended target population, produce a range of possible and variable outcomes. This in turn requires methodological developments that also take into account changing values and attitudes ...

The Privilege of Persecution

Many Americans view the persecuted church as “third-world,” needy, uneducated, and poor -- sorely lacking in much of what we assume the church needs to function well. Essentially, we see them as being in need of us. But the irony, say Carl Moeller and David Hegg, is that we’re in much greater need of them. Through a combination of inspiring real-life stories, first-hand experiences, and exposition of key Scripture passages, Dr. Carl Moeller and Pastor David Hegg examine the "e;normal Christian life"e; of Christ-followers currently suffering persecution around the world. In topical chapter after chapter, the authors conclude that the suffering church's vibrant, sacrificial, and communal faith is much closer to God's intent for His church and His children. The authors explore the areas of community, leadership, worship, prayer, and generosity, among others, revealing specific attitudes and actions of the suffering church that can renew the spiritual lives of Christians in the West. Each chapter ends with challenging questions and suggestions for personal and corporate application.
