The demands on innovative materials given by the ever-increasing requirements of contemporary industry require the use of high-performance engineering materials. The properties of materials and alloys are a result of their structures, which can primarily be affected by the preparation/production process. However, the production of materials featuring high levels of the required properties without the necessity to use costly alloying elements or time- and money-demanding heat treatment technologies typically used to enhance the mechanical properties of metallic materials (especially specific strength) still remains a challenge. The introduction of thermomechanical treatment represented a brea...

Targeted Use of Forming-Induced Residual Stresses in Metal Components

Residual stresses are considered critical to quality in conventional manufacturing strategies. This is where the DFG’s Priority Programme 2013 comes in, looking instead at the opportunities and possibilities for improving the properties of components by targeted use of residual stresses. In the years 2017 to 2023, research teams from all over Germany were able to prove the stability, controllability and usefulness of residual stresses in flat and solid forming manufacturing processes of metallic components. In addition, the cross-project working groups achieved many insights into the fundamental understanding, simulation and, in particular, industry-oriented measurement of residual stresses. The extensive results of these six years of research activities are presented in this final report.

Handbook of Mechanical Nanostructuring

Providing in-depth information on how to obtain high-performance materials by controlling their nanostructures, this ready reference covers both the bottom-up and the top-down approaches to the synthesis and processing of nanostructured materials. The focus is on advanced methods of mechanical nanostructuring such as severe plastic deformation, including high pressure torsion, equal channel angular processing, cyclic extrusion compression, accumulative roll bonding, and surface mechanical attrition treatment. As such, the contents are inherently application-oriented, with the methods presented able to be easily integrated into existing production processes. In addition, the structure-property relationships and ways of influencing the nanostructure in order to exhibit a desired functionality are reviewed in detail. The whole is rounded off by a look at future directions, followed by an overview of applications in various fields of structural and mechanical engineering. With its solutions for successful processing of complex-shaped workpieces and large-scale specimens with desired properties, this is an indispensable tool for purposeful materials design.

Shape Memory Alloys

Shape memory alloys have become in the past decades a well established research subject. However, the complex relations between properties and structure have created a continuously growing interest for a deeper insight all this time. The complexity of relationships between structure and properties is mostly related to the fact that strong ?multidimensional? interactions are taking place: from the early studies focusing on the thermal and/or mechanical induced phase transformations to the more recent findings on the magnetically induced structural changes. On the other hand, these singular behavioral characteristics have driven a great industrial interest due to the innovative aspects that the applications of shape memory alloys may provide. This makes this subject a highly attractive source of continuous studies, ranging from basics crystallography and thermodynamics to mechanical analysis and electrical and magnetic properties characterization. In this book, a group of recent studies is compiled focusing on a wide range of topics from processing to the relationship between the structure and properties, as well as new applications.

This book describes efficient and safe repair operations for pipelines, and develops new methods for the detection and repair of volumetric surface defects in transmission pipelines. It also addresses the physics, mechanics, and applications of advanced materials used for composite repair of corroded pipelines. Presenting results obtained in the European Commission’s INNOPIPES FRAMEWORK 7 programme, it develops long-range ultrasonic and phased array technologies for pipeline diagnostics, and explores their interactions with discontinuities and directional properties of ultrasonic antenna array. The book subsequently shares the results of non-destructive testing for different types of mater...

Thermo-Mechanical Processing of Metallic Materials describes the science and technology behind modern thermo-mechanical processing (TMP), including detailed descriptions of successful examples of its application in the industry. This graduate-level introductory resource aims to fill the gap between two scientific approaches and illustrate their successful linkage by the use of suitable modern case studies. The book is divided into three key sections focusing on the basics of metallic materials processing. The first section covers the microstructural science base of the subject, including the microstructure determined mechanical properties of metals. The second section deals with the current ...

Creep in Metallic Materials

Hardbound. The phenomenon of time-dependent plastic deformation of metallic materials under constant load at high temperatures has been documented for at least two centuries and is now termed high temperature creep. A better understanding of creep behaviour of metals and alloys is highly desirable, not only for predictions and thus more efficient exploitation of contemporary creep-resistant metallic materials, but also such an understanding may be of great help in designing new materials and their thermal and mechanical treatment. The aim of this monograph is to provide a comprehensive review of the current status of knowledge of mechanisms of high temperature creep, creep damage and creep fracture in metals and alloys. In the introductory chapters 1-6, the time dependence of creep strain, mechanical equation of state, dislocation motion in creep and dependence of creep rate on temperature, stress and some structure parameters are treated in a traditio
