Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and sepsis remain leading causes of patient morbidity and mortality and the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the continuing lack of effective therapeutic options for these and other related acute inflammatory conditions. Recently, a host of novel medicinal approaches have been investigated to address this problem, such as advances in the development of pharmacological agents, recombinant protein drugs and cell and gene therapies. Bioinformatics based approaches and clinical profiling of patients are also paving the way for stratification, targeted therapies and precision medicines. Given recent exciting work in this field, this is a timely opportunity to showcase exciting advances in the field of critical care medicine, particularly those relying on paradigm shifting modalities and outside-the-box approaches to address this family of devastating conditions.
Approach any critical care challenge using a practical, consistent strategy based on best practices with Evidence-Based Practice of Critical Care, 3rd Edition. Unique, question-based chapters cover the wide variety of clinical options in critical care, examine the relevant research, and provide recommendations based on a thorough analysis of available evidence. Drs. Clifford S. Deutschman and Patrick J. Nelligan, along with nearly 200 critical-care experts, provide a comprehensive framework for translating evidence into practice, helping both residents and practitioners obtain the best possible outcomes for critically ill patients. - Covers a full range of critical care challenges, from rout...
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States has deemed extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs)-producing Enterobacterales and multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa as serious threats and carbapenem-resistant (CR) Enterobacterales (CRE) and CR Acinetobacter as urgent threats. Due to the prevalent drug resistance of these strains and lack of antimicrobial alternatives, the treatment of infections caused by these MDR Gram-negative pathogens rely on tigecycline, polymyxins (colistin and polymyxin B) or new β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combinations (such as ceftazidime-avibactam, CAZ/AVI). However, the critically ill patients with antimicrobial infection are associated with high mortality. Hence, the prevalence and optimal therapy for critically ill patients with antimicrobial resistance are worth further study.
Recent Advances in Natural Products Analysis is a thorough guide to the latest analytical methods used for identifying and studying bioactive phytochemicals and other natural products. Chemical compounds, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, carotenoids and saponins are examined, highlighting the many techniques for studying their properties. Each chapter is devoted to a compound category, beginning with the underlying chemical properties of the main components followed by techniques of extraction, purification and fractionation, and then techniques of identification and quantification. Biological activities, possible interactions, levels found in plants, the effects of processing, and current and potential industrial applications are also included. - Focuses on the latest analytical techniques used for studying phytochemical and other biological compounds - Authored and edited by the top worldwide experts in their field - Discusses the current and potential applications and predicts future trends of each compound group
This practically oriented book provides an up-to-date overview of all significant aspects of the pathogenesis of sepsis and its management, including within the intensive care unit. Readers will find information on the involvement of the coagulation and endocrine systems during sepsis and on the use of biomarkers to diagnose sepsis and allow early intervention. International clinical practice guidelines for the management of sepsis are presented, and individual chapters focus on aspects such as fluid resuscitation, vasopressor therapy, response to multiorgan failure, antimicrobial therapy, and adjunctive immunotherapy. The closing section looks forward to the coming decade, discussing novel trial designs, sepsis in low- and middle-income countries, and emerging management approaches. The book is internatio nal in scope, with contributions from leading experts worldwide. It will be of value to residents and professionals/practitioners in the fields of infectious diseases and internal medicine, as well as to GPs and medical students.

The European economic crisis has been ongoing since 2008 and while austerity has spread over the continent, it has failed to revive economies. The media have played an important ideological role in presenting the policies of economic and political elites in a favourable light, even if the latter’s aim has been to shift the burden of adjustment onto citizens. This book explains how and why, using a critical political economic perspective and focusing on the case of Ireland. Throughout, Ireland is compared with contemporary and historical examples to contextualise the arguments made. The book covers the housing bubble that led to the crash, the rescue of financial institutions by the state, the role of the European institutions and the International Monetary Fund, austerity, and the possibility of leaving the eurozone for Europe’s peripheral countries. Through a systematic analysis of Ireland’s main newspapers, it is argued that the media reflect elite views and interests and downplay alternative policies that could lead to more progressive responses to the crisis.
