Thomas Jefferson is best known as one of the founders of the United States. His chief love, however, was not politics, but farming. His writings abound with expressions of loathing for the former and perpetual fascination for the latter. "Cultivators of the earth are the most valuable citizens," he wrote to John Jay in 1785. While his contributions to the field of government overshadow his many other accomplishments, he also made many brilliant and expert contributions to the development of sustainable, regenerative methods of farming. The 11 chapters address a variety of issues that shaped Jefferson's farming including his methods, crops, alternative crops he promoted, farm machinery, his workers (overseer, slaves, and free workmen). Monticello, landscaping practices, and his plans for a school of botany at the University of Virginia. This book also brings to the fore the human qualities of the man in relation to both his family and his country and shows that his aspirations for both were habitually put before his own. Here is yet another way to understand that without Thomas Jefferson, America would have become a different nation.

School Library Journal Best Book of the Year NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book American Farm Bureau Foundation for Education Recommended Book Besides being a general and the first president of the United States, did you know that George Washington was also a farmer? Here's a look at America's first President as he's rarely seen. George Washington was the first leader of our country—but he was also an inventor, scientist, and the most forward-thinking farmer of his time. As he worked to make the new country independent, he also struggled to create a self-sufficient farm at Mount Vernon, Virginia. Excerpts from Washington's writings are featured throughout this nonfiction picture book, which also includes a timeline, resource section, as well as essays on Washington at Mount Vernon and his thoughts on slavery. Thomas Mellon And His Times

In 1885, at the age of seventy-two and "in the evening of life," Thomas Mellon published his autobiography in a limited edition exclusively for his family. He was a distinguished and highly successful Pittsburgh entrepreneur, judge, and banker, and his descendants would play major roles in American business, art, and philanthropy. Two of his sons, Andrew William and Richard Beatty, were to join Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller as the four wealthiest men in the United States.Thomas Mellon was an anomaly among the great American capitalists of his time. Highly literate and intelligent, astute and deadly honest about his own life and financial success, and an excellent narrative writer with a...

The Stars Have Eyes

Commander Calla Minerva of the Death and Taxes affectionately calls herself "The Better Half of the Best Crew In the Galaxy," and perhaps there's some truth to that. Along with Captain Oliver "Archimedes" Anderson, she operates one of the galaxy's last serving FTL freighters. They tell their clients they're the last because they're the best, but the silent truth is that ships have been slowly disappearing for years. Everyone has an explanation: it's too expensive, it's too dangerous, it's too difficult to be away from home like that. Others blame a "curse" that eats ships. Few people know the truth, and the longer Calla and Oliver operate their ship, the more likely they are to find out exactly why they say, "The Stars Have Eyes."
