Non-profit-maximizing behavior in supply chain management focuses on the human component in supply chain management. It develops behavioral models that consider individual and social preferences of supply chain members in order to improve our understanding of actual decision-making in supply chain management. The author challenges the common assumption of a selfish homo economicus and introduces the human component in three experimental studies: In the first study, he examines the effect of individual risk preferences in the Newsvendor context. In the second study, a common group identity to overcome incentive conflicts in forecast sharing is studied. The third study explores underlying cognitive processes in contractual decision-making. In the world of business management, most inventory models assume that open orders arrive after a lead time that cannot be controlled by the inventory manager. However, in many real world situations, inventory managers have the option to expedite open orders. Due to the lack of appropriate models, they often have to rely on sub-optimal heuristics to make expediting decisions. This book incorporates an expediting level policy in a periodic-review base-stock inventory model and shows how the optimal solution can be computed. The approaches can be implemented easily and are capable of solving large problems efficiently. This book focuses on supply chains with uncertainty due to random yields. A common assumption in such systems is that the yields are observable only after all transportation or production steps are completed. The actual yield realization however happens earlier during the process. Technological advances and stronger supply chain collaboration make it possible to observe yield realization in real time and therefore close the time gap between the event and the observation. Within this thesis optimal and heuristic policies are developed that make use of this new type of information in various supply chain settings. These policies are used to identify conditions under which real time yield information is particularly beneficial. This book is relevant to both scholars and practitioners interested in managing supply chains with random yields.
During the last decades, freight transportation experienced a worldwide boom. At the same time, competition increased considerably, such that efficient cost structures are indispensable for any market player. One of the main challenges a transportation company faces is the efficient employment of its personnel in operations, commonly referred to as crew scheduling. In this book the author presents solution approaches to large-scale crew scheduling. Firstly, the implementation of state-of-the-art operations research methods for a setting at a major European freight railway carrier is presented. Secondly, the author discusses acceleration techniques that make the developed algorithms applicable even in short-term contexts.
