One-parameter semigroup theory started to be an important branch of mathematics in the thirties when it was realized that the theory has direct applications to partial differential equations, random processes, infinite dimensional control theory, mathematical physics, etc. It is now generally accepted as an integral part of contemporary functional analysis. Compact strongly continuous semigroups have been an important research subject since a long time, as in almost all applications of partial differential equations with bounded domains the semigroups turn out to be compact. From this point of view, the present volume of the Leuven Notes in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics emphasizes a special subclass of these semigroups. In fact, the focus here is mainly on semigroups acting on a Hilbert space H with values in the trace class ideal C1(H) of bounded operators on H. Historically, this class of semigroups is closely related to quantum statistical mechanics.
The goal of the Entropy and the Quantum schools has been to introduce young researchers to some of the exciting current topics in mathematical physics. These topics often involve analytic techniques that can easily be understood with a dose of physical intuition. In March of 2010, four beautiful lectures were delivered on the campus of the University of Arizona. They included Isoperimetric Inequalities for Eigenvalues of the Laplacian by Rafael Benguria, Universality of Wigner Random Matrices by Laszlo Erdos, Kinetic Theory and the Kac Master Equation by Michael Loss, and Localization in Disordered Media by Gunter Stolz. Additionally, there were talks by other senior scientists and a number of interesting presentations by junior participants. The range of the subjects and the enthusiasm of the young speakers are testimony to the great vitality of this field, and the lecture notes in this volume reflect well the diversity of this school.
The present volume collects the contributions to the conference "Order, disorder and chaos in quantum systems" which was held at Dubna last October. It is the third meeting in the series started three years ago in which we tried to put together mathematical physicists from the member and non-member countries of JINR with their colleagues from soviet universities and institutes using this international centre as a convenient basis.
