During the height of his career, he supplied an estimated 80 percent of the cocaine smuggled into the United States. He was widely regarded as the "King of Cocaine", and the wealthiest drug lord in history with a net worth that had exceeded $30 billion by the start of the 90s, and estimated $50 billion including the money hidden in different areas in Colombia.

In addition, they explore the ways artists can create new maps and methods for their creative visions. Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was born on December 1, 1949 in Rionegro, the Antioquia Department of Colombia. His father, Abel de Jesús Dari Escobar, was a farmer and his mother, Hermilda Gaviria, was a teacher in an elementary school in the area. He was the third of seven children of his parents and began his criminal activities as a teenager. Some reports claim that he would steal gravestones, sand them down, and then resell them to smugglers. However, his brother denies that he used to steal those gravestones. His friends and family report that Pablo would often tell them that he wanted to become the president of Colombia. Instead, he became the world's most notorious drug lord.

Narcoepics Unbound foregrounds the controversial yet mostly untheorized phenomenon of contemporary Latin American 'narcoepics.' Dealing with literary works and films whose characteristics are linked to illicit global exchange, informal labor, violence, 'bare life,' drug consumption, and ritualistic patterns of identity, it argues for a new theoretical approach to better understand these 'narratives of intoxication.' Foregrounding the art that has arisen from or seeks to describe drug culture, Herlinghaus' comparative study looks at writers such as Gutiérrez, J. J. Rodríguez, Reverte, films such as City of God, and the narratives surrounding cultural villains/heroes such as Pablo Escobar. Narcoepics shows that that in order to grasp the aesthetic and ethical core of these narratives it is pivotal, first, to develop an 'aesthetics of sobriety.' The aim is to establish a criteria for a new kind of literary studies, in which cultural hermeneutics plays as much a part as political philosophy, analysis of religion, and neurophysiological inquiry.
