The Road of Awakening
The rainstorm passed, leaving behind droplets of rain dripping rhythmically; looking out, the sky looks to turning a greyish hue. The bustle and din gradually disappear, and the school becomes quiet once again. School is over, as students gradually make their way home. I sit in this quiet classroom with a mixture of excitement and agitation, waiting for a momentous ritual that would be a watershed moment. What kind of ceremony would this be? What would my future be? Moments later, Ms. Kwan Man-Yiu enters, and closes the door behind her. She reminds me further, “You must always meet your leader in public places, and wait no more than ten minutes. And make sure you lose your tail.” “Remember, don’t ask anything that doesn’t concern you. The Party will let you know what you need to know. Don’t even acknowledge any comrades unless it is someone you report to directly.” Finally, she adds, “During the time of White Terror, things were even more precarious. If you try to set up a time to meet over the phone, subtract any date or time by one.” I struggle to remember everything she said, and become a “comrade”, thereby rewriting the entire story of my life.

This book explores the dynamics of China’s new united front work in Hong Kong. Mainland Chinese penetrative politics can be seen in the activities of local pro-Beijing political parties, clans and neighborhood associations, labor unions, women and media organizations, district federations, and some religious groups. However, united front work in the educational and youth sectors of civil society has encountered strong resistance because many Hong Kong people are post-materialistic and uphold their core values of human rights, the rule of law and transparency. China’s new united front work in Hong Kong has been influenced by its domestic turn toward “hard” authoritarianism, making Beijing see Hong Kong’s democratic activists and radicals as political enemies. Hong Kong’s “one country, two systems” is drifting toward “one country, two mixed systems” with some degree of convergence. Yet, Taiwan and some foreign countries have seen China’s united front work as politically destabilizing and penetrative. Electing Hong Kong's Chief Executive
In 2007, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region held its first-ever contested election for Chief Executive, selected by 800 members of an Election Committee drawn from roughly 7% of the population. The outcome was a foregone conclusion, but the process allowed a pro-democracy legislator to obtain enough nominations to contest the election. The office of Chief Executive is as unique as the system used to fill the office, distinct from colonial governors and other leaders a Chinese provinces and municipalities. The head of the HKSAR enjoys greater autonomous powers, such as powers to nominate principal officials for Chinese appointment, pardon offenders and appoint judges. Despite its many anti-democratic features, the Election Committee has generated behavior typically associated with elections in leading capitalist democracies and has also gained prominence on the mainland as the vehicle for returning Hong Kong deputies to the National People's Congress. This book reviews the history and development of the Election Committee (and its predecessor), discusses its ties to legislative assemblies in Hong Kong and Mainland China, and reflects on the future of the system.
