Humanitarian Crises and International Relations (1959-2013) presents a brief study of the relations between sovereign nations from 1959 to the current Afghanistan crisis (post NATO intervention). Each chapter is going to analyze a specific crisis in a chronological order. The chapters demonstrate how humanitarian crises linked to civil and military conflicts have reshaped international relations in our world today. This book is a key tool for students undertaking courses related to the history of international relations as well as human rights and on international migrations. The topics in this book are connected to different disciplines (Anthropology, History and Political Science) and attempt to trace the most important change in the history of international relations related to the world crisis viz civil or external conflicts.
Exploring narratives produced by different groups of MENA and SSA migrants or refugees, this book focuses on the spatial and temporal aspects of their experiences. In doing so, the authors examine a wide range of accounts of journeys to host countries and memories (or recreations) of “home”. The spaces that migrants occupy (or not) in their new country; the spaces and times they share with local populations; and different conceptions of space and time across generations are also investigated, as are how feelings surrounding space and time are manifested within these different narratives and their affective-discursive practices. Taking both a traditional, linear view of migration as well as a multilinear, multimodal approach, the book presents an in-depth investigation into the ways in which people inhabit multiple real and digital spaces.
This book focuses on the minority of Tibetan Muslims among the Tibetan Diaspora. Most scholars remain unaware of the Tibetan Muslim community or its associations with Buddhism and the Dalai Lama. As a religious and political leader, he is the embodiment of Tibetan space, territory, population, religion, and identity. The Western public has assumed a monolithic vision of Tibet as a pure Buddhist Theocracy. However, Tibet was impacted by other religions, i.e. Christianity and Islam. The 100.000 Tibetan refugees in India are one of the largest Tibetan Diaspora; the majority are Buddhist, and the Muslim minority is estimated at no more than a few hundred families. Tibetan Muslims constitute a minority within another Tibetan Buddhist minority of exiled Tibetans in India. The study based on field research emphasises a hybrid process of the Tibetan Muslims Diaspora in exile. A cultural Buddhist Tibetan heritage associated with Kashmiri Muslim rituals and customs creates hybrid cultural practices and traditions, which could be characterized as rhizomatic.
After offering the reader the general context of Tibetan forced migration to India evoking Tibetan history, culture, the book looks closely at different methodologies using images. Classic ethnographic tools, such as film or relatively new methods, like photovoice or self-picturing are compared. The study sits at the crossroads of social science disciplines, such as history, ethnography, and geography and is based on original field research conducted in India since 2008. Majnu Ka Tilla is the name of the Tibetan colony in New Delhi and the preferential location of an experimental study related to memory and the spatial features of memory. The bridge is an ethnic frontier and a memorial urban point of reference creating the spatial memory.
