This book offers a multifaceted approach to education in the 21st century. It focuses not only on the problems schools have to face nowadays, but also on the numerous challenges that emerge and can be used as opportunities for reflection and renewal in education. The aim of the book is to holistically approach educational reality as shaped by the latest social, political and economic developments. The ultimate goal is not limited to a description of the current situation. Given its range and topicality, this book expands the discussion and examines the role of education in modern society, highlights the challenges and prospects for the schools of the future, enriches the relevant research, provides documented data for action planning in terms of educational policies, and presents examples of good educational practices which will be useful to teachers and everyone who works in education.
This textbook of selected qualitative studies is concerned with the exploration of current educational issues in relation to teachers, students, parents, the scientific community and common readers. Using scientific and comprehensible methods, the contributions explore individuals’ attitudes, viewpoints and behaviours through studies conducted in Greece and Cyprus, yet in topics common in the European and international educational and social space. Therefore, this textbook addresses an expanded audience of scientists and common readers, who can be informed about contemporary research methodology and corresponding theory. It allows the reader to communicate with science through a “reader-friendly” manner, while, at the same time, corresponding to scientific ethics and every person’s interest in understanding and being informed about social situations. At a time when lifelong education is enhanced, scientific tools must be readapted so that social and educational discourse is both scientific and comprehensible.
This comprehensive study of digital visualization brings together insights from the fields of anthropology and music analysis and explores their import for critical pedagogy and digital education. Anchored on an array of ethnographically informed examples of visualization, it discusses the cultural, educational and cognitive repercussions of our engagement with visually-centered research and teaching. The book offers a hands-on approach to experimental pedagogies attuned to the needs of researchers, educators and artists in the digital humanities who seek to open passageways between theory and praxis.
The ability to regulate and control our behaviors is a key accomplishment of the human species, yet the psychological mechanisms involved in self-regulation remain incompletely understood. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 14th IFIP WG 12.5 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations, AIAI 2018, held in Rhodes, Greece, in May 2018. The 42 full papers and 12 short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 88 submissions. They are organized in the following topical sections: social media, games, ontologies; deep learning; support vector machines; constraints; machine learning, regression, classification; neural networks; medical intelligence; recommender systems; optimization; learning, intelligence; heuristic approaches, cloud; fuzzy; and human and computer interaction, sound, video, processing.
Ten years ago, a fateful intersection of technology risk, and split second decisions claimed 290 lives when the USS VICENNES mistakenly shot down a commercial airliner over the Persian Gulf. In the aftermath of this tragedy, a revolutionary applied research programme known as TADMUS (Tactical Decision Making Under Stress) was launched. The TADMUS programme was devoted to developing and improving training and decision support technology in the US Navy. This volume documents the lessons learned from TADMUS - a programme of research driven by a common operational problem, based on a common theoretical framework, and employing a common methodology and task. The military has long been in the vanguard of using human factors research to increase the efficiency and reduce the danger of critical tasks. The abundant technical and operational accomplishments described here should be valuable to all front-line personnel in high-risk environments.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a dynamic field that is constantly expanding into new application areas, discovering new research challenges and facilitating the devel- ment of innovative products. Today’s information overload and rapid technological advancement raise needs for effective management of the complexity and heteroge- ity of knowledge, for intelligent and adaptable man–machine interfaces and for pr- ucts and applications that can learn and take decisions by themselves. Although the mystery of human-level intelligence has just started to be uncovered in various int- disciplinary fields, AI is inspired by the respective scientific areas to explore certain theories and models th...
