Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants: 1694-1742
The "headright" system, widely used for acquiring land in Virginia was never recognized in Virginia's Northern Neck. People wanting to acquire land there had to purchase a warrant and obtain a survey before they were issued a grant. The original Grant Books, now on microfilm, were used in making this collection of abstracts, and they generally provide the following information on some 5,000 Northern Neck residents: the name of the grantee, dates of warrant and survey, date and location of grant, amount of acreage, names of former owners/occupiers, names of adjacent property owners, and often the names of heirs and other family members.

The Synans of Virginia
William Synan was born in about 1800 in County Cork, Ireland. He emigrated in about 1812 and settled in Virginia. He married Sarah Terry, daughter of Emmanuel Terry, 9 January 1821 in Louisa County, Virginia. They had six children. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Virginia. Includes Blankenbaker, Brooks, Riley and related families.
West Virginia Baseball
West Virginia sprang into existence as a state in the midst of the Civil War, and "base ball," as it was called then, was close on the heels of statehood. A game in 1866 hosted by the Hunkidori Base Ball Club in Wheeling, is considered the first "match game of Base Ball."
